Blog #1 Due Tuesday March 31

Hey y'all!

For your first blog post "Dear Bruce Springsteen" club needs to have read up to page 26. Choose any of the 5 writing elements to analyze for your post.

Although you may blog on any of the 5 elements, it is an advantage to speak with your group so that everyone is not commenting on the same thing. This will assist in your group meetings and allow a higher quality and variation of discussion.

Your posts should be approximatly 2 paragraphs but there is no maximum. Although you are required to respond to 1 post, you may exceed this limit as long as you wish to comment on peoples blogs.

Each blog is worth 7 marks and each response is worth 3 marks for a total 50 marks for all 5 sections combined. Blogs will be either accepted for full marks or rejected for 0 out of 7 or 0 out of 3 for that respective assesment component.

This unit concludes with a book review which is described on the main ELA Grade 7 blog and will be worth 100 marks.

To post your first blog simply press 'comment' below this post.

  1. In this reading section there are many characters introduced. All of them are introduced by Terry Blanchard; who is the main character in this book. Almost all of these characters are 3 dimintional characters. Examples of the 3D characters are: Terry, his mom, his dad, Jerkins, Amanda, and especially Bruce Springsteen. I found 1 flat character so far in this book. That person is Mrs. Lamb.

I think there will be many more characters appearing through the progresion of this book. I also think Terry will talk more about Jerkins and how he doesn't like school.

    Terry Blanchard.
Terry is in 9th grade. He was named after his fathers friend who died in a motercycle accedint. He has a 10 year old sister named Amanda, and his parents are seperated. He loves Bruce Springsteen music and his father did too.

So far, I would reccomend this book to most people at around my age because it relates to me, and I think it will relate to most people high school.

  2. i agree with Oren on what he said about the characters being 3dimensional. Also what Oren said about Mrs Lamb going to probably be introduced later in the book 3dimensional.

  3. In this reading section their are many themes that happen. One of them is Jenkins always putting Terry down with his mean comments, and regular put downs.Another one is when Terry told Bruce Springsteen in his letter how much he loves Bruce Springsteen's music. The themes are revealed when Terry Blanchard writes his letters to Bruce Springsteen and Terry tells Bruce Springsteen about himself.

I think there will be more themes that will be developed in the rest of the book.

Terry Blanchard is 14 years old he has a sister named Amanda and she thinks she can ask her mom for anything and thinks she will get it. Then after she gets it she will play with it for a month and never use it again.
Amanda's mom is a nursing assistant and shes on her feet a lot and Terry gets the inside scoop on all the accidents and who's having what baby. Some of it she'll only tell after Amanda has gone to bed.

so far i really like this book a lot and i would recommend it to people in high school or kids who like rock music.

  4. I agree with Leor's comment about Amanda asking for everything and then using it once and never using it again. I think that Amanda should give a little more thought to what she really wants and will actually use. I disagree with Oren when he said that Mrs. Lamb was a flat character and not 3 dimensional. I think that we don't know enough about her yet to say whether or not she is flat or 3 dimensional.

  5. In this first reading section we have found out a lot of information on the characters, the theme, and the setting. So far we have learned that the main characters are Terry, Amanda, their mother and Bruce Springsteen. We have also found out that Terry has a hard time with his schoolwork, and that he and his teachers don’t get along very well.

The main setting in this book would be Terry’s house or Terry’s school. He enjoys music and his favourite singer is Bruce Springsteen. Bruce Springsteen is a very famous rock star and is Terry’s hero. Terry has been writing letters to Bruce telling him about his life. We have found out that Terry lives in a small town in an apartment and that he has a sister named Amanda, a mother and a father that has taken off and hasn’t been seen for over 6 months.

  6. I agree with Julia that Terry has a hard time with his school work especially math. However Julia said that that Terry got along with none of his teachers but Terry writes in how letter to Bruce Springsteen that half his teachers are decent and he sometimes gets along with them!!!

  7. I agree with what Julia said, but Julia also stated that we don't know enough about Mrs. Lamb to be a flat or a 3 dimensional character; but that is just it, a flat character is one who we don't know enough about. All we know about her is that she only loves students that get A's. That is not enough for a 3 dimensional character to have.

A perfect example of this is Terry's mom. She is not a main character, although we know enough about her to make her a 3 dimensional character. She is a nurses assistant and likes her job. She is a working mother, and is raising 2 children alone. She gets along well with Terry and really cares about him. We know this because after working a long day, she still is willing to make Terry spaghtti with real sauce. This proves that we know a lot about her, making her a 3 dimensional character.

This relates to the main topic of this responce, about Mrs. Lamb being a flat character and not 3 dimensional. We know that Terry's mom will be talked about more in this book because Terry said it himself, "...we get along okay, but most times she's pretty decent." This means that Terry is very fond of his mother and will be mentioning to Bruce Springsteen more about their relationship.
